Losing the unwanted body fat has become easier with the newest FDA-approved non-surgical fat reduction treatment called CoolSculpting.
There are certain areas on our bodies with diet- or exercise-resistant fat: usually around the waist (commonly referred to as “love handles”), lower abdominal fat, thighs. One can be slim and still have an excess of resistant body fat.
Before CoolSculpting, you’d have to either consider a surgical liposuction with all of the possible side effects or make yourself comfortable with living with ample amount of handles for love to grip.
How CoolSculpting Works
CoolSculpting technology targets the weak point of body fat, which is the fact that adipose (fat) cells freeze sooner than the surrounding tissues. During the procedure, a precisely controlled cold temperature is delivered to the areas of the body where the fat needs to be reduced. The fat cells that are more sensitive to cold than other cells in the tissues freeze off and die. That temperature is not cold enough to do any harm to other cells of the body.
The components of the dead fat cells are subsequently removed and processed by specialized body cells called macrophages. It has been demonstrated that this removal process is so efficient, that the patient’s blood cholesterol and lipid levels stay normal or even slightly decrease. The cool thing about this procedure is that you don’t need to have a surgical incision anywhere on your skin. It dissolves the fat internally within one hour with no downtime, no pain, and no serious side effects.
How many procedures are required?
Typically, each area takes 1-3 treatments depending on the amount of fat to be reduced and patient’s goals.
What are the side effects of CoolSculpting?
During the procedure, you might experience a tingling sensation, pressure, intense cold, pinching and tenderness which usually subsides fairly quickly and are easily tolerated. As with any medical procedure, there is a possibility of rare side effects which are related to specific medical conditions a person might have. Specific contraindications for the CoolSculping procedure are such conditions as cryoglobulinemia or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria.
The patients known to have these conditions will be advised against the procedure.
When the results become visible?
Although the fat cells are frozen to death right away, it takes weeks and sometimes months for the body to cleanse the treated area from the dead fat cells. Therefore, the visible slimming of the treated area becomes apparent gradually over time.
After having a CoolSculpting procedure, will I ever gain fat in the treated area again?
During the CoolSculping procedure, many but not all fat cells in the treated area are permanently destroyed. However, with the improper diet, the remaining fat cells may increase in size, accumulating fat. Therefore, the treated area may accumulate fat to some extent. That’s the case for all fat reduction methods, not just for CoolSculpting. It’s important to understand that CoolSculpting is not a method for treating obesity and dietary problems, but rather a localized body sculpting technique. Consultation with an experienced, licensed professional will help you understand whether CoolSculpting will be an efficient and safe treatment option for you.
